Video | The Signature Check

by Christina Siderius | August 18th, 2009

You know you want to pop your head in the Elections Division door and see how all this R-71 signature check business actually works …

But since you can’t (sorry, we’re at our observer max down there), we’re bringing the check to you. This 5-minute video shows you the basics of signature checking and gives you an idea of what our checkers are up to:

  1. Can we lose the music? Seriously, it reminds me of a 1950′s vintage travel promo for the Eden Rock Hotel in Miami Beach. Respectfully, we are talking about a process which we know for a fact used mis-information to obtain some signatures as well as was mis-leading in the bold headlines of the sheets themselves. A process which intends to take away the rights of important citizens of Washington and their families. IE will hurt people. I understand why you made this video, but it isn’t a joke.

  2. Zona Lenhart says:

    Great job! Clear and concise.

  3. Harold Stoehr says:

Very well done video! I have a better understanding of “how” all those signatures are verified – what alot of manual work! Wow!!

  4. My comment is still awaiting moderation? Is it my organization, my tone or the fact that the SOS’s office does not like outside criticism from a state whose SOS provides public records such as petition signers already on a searchable database in electronic form and free to anyone who asks. Also, the current Massachusetts SOS said that KnowThyNeighbor’s strategy was “perfectly legal and the American way.” An earlier SOS went on record to say that any official public entity that does not provide the public with access to public records in the most up to date format, ie, in the internet is effectively doing a dis-service to the public and is standing in the way of its own public records laws. My conversations with the SOS’s office clearly tells me that Washington does not see it this way.
